Vara Safety started with a mission to help responsible gun owners better protect their families and homes. The gun that protects a household is also the most dangerous object in it, and for a long time the only answers on offer were to lock it far away or to leave it close and unlocked.

We did not think owners should have to pick. So we worked with more than 1,500 gun owners, from many kinds of homes, to design a safe around the moment that matters: reaching for a firearm in the dark and needing it to be there, in a firing grip, for you and for nobody else.

Engineers first

Vara is a technology-led company founded by engineers from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. When we found that the fingerprint sensors in gun safes were unreliable, we built our own biometric system, with a capacitive sensor and an algorithm that keeps learning your print. It unlocks in 0.2 seconds and it is the same system in every biometric safe we make.
